WHEREAS, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA unilaterally committed material and financial resources within hours of the devastation in New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, during the weeks immediately after the storm and flooding, PHS/SPCA delivered more than $21,000 in cash, plus myriad donated supplies; and

WHEREAS, PHS/SPCA constructed temporary kennels in its San Mateo parking lot to allow the acceptance of 64 displaced pets flown in from the disaster areas, eventually reuniting some 25 percent with their families; and

WHEREAS, PHS/SPCA purchased airline seats for some volunteers to accompany a few animals back to the Gulf Coast; and

WHEREAS, PHS/SPCA continues to care for Katrina-displaced animals, find them suitable homes in the Bay Area, and if needed, will act as liaison between original and new owners.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County recognizes and commends the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for their unmatched work in providing relief for animals affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes and flooding. The tireless efforts by PHS/SPCA staff and volunteers exemplify the spirit of compassion and generosity found throughout San Mateo County. The Board hereby extends its gratitude and sincere wishes for continued excellence.
