SUBJECT:

Amendment to the Agreement with Bay Area Urology Group

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the President of the Board to execute an amendment to the agreement with Bay Area Urology Group to extend the length of service through February 28, 2006.

Vision Alignment

This agreement keeps the commitment to Ensure Basic Health and Safety for All and goal number 5: Provide residents access to healthcare and preventive care.

The amendment contributes to this commitment and goal by continuing to provide urology services, which includes surgical management of disorders of the kidney, urethral tract, and bladder to county patients.

Background

San Mateo County is responsible for providing necessary medical care to its medically indigent population. This care includes professional urology services, which includes disorders of the kidney, urethral tract, and bladder. The Bay Area Urology Group has continuously provided professional urology services, including surgical management and supervision of those services, since 2003.

Discussion

The current agreement with Bay Areas Urology Group expires as of December 31, 2005. They are currently renegotiating their contracts with other area hospitals and have asked for a two month extension of their current contract with the San Mateo Medical Center. The extension would be at Bay Area Urology Group’s prevailing reimbursement rate.

Urology services are provided under the general direction of the Medical Director of Ambulatory Services. Monitoring and evaluation of the quality of services provided by contractors are accomplished through peer review by the Quality Assurance Committee and the Executive Committee of the medical staff.

Fiscal Impact

The term of the previous Agreement is being amended to extend the contract by two months from December 31, 2005 to February 28, 2006. The original contract was funded to cover an anticipated 20% increase over base productivity. Since the actual productivity increase is closer to10% over base productivity no additional funds are required. The maximum amount of County’s obligation under the terms of this agreement remains unchanged at $474,398.68. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center’s FY2005-06 Adopted Budget.
