OFFICER RICHARD ALLEN MAY DAY In Honor and Remembrance of Officer May | ||||

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo extends its deepest gratitude for Officer Richard “Rich” Allen May’s service to his city and county, and mourns the loss of a community hero; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Officer May served the City of East Palo Alto Police Department for 21 months and dedicated himself to making the community safer and stronger for all residents. His lifetime of public service included 16 years as a police officer, 14 of those in the City of Lompoc as an officer and instructor, and six years of service to his country in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the 1991 Gulf War “Desert Storm”; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Officer May had a true passion for serving youth and for seeing them reach their maximum potential. He was active in the City of East Palo Alto’s Explorer Program and designed and developed the Lompoc Police Activities League, so that youth could be involved in pro-social activities and develop positive relationships with law enforcement. He received training in the D.A.R.E. Program to bring awareness to youth about the negative consequences of drugs, and had training in Juvenile Investigations, Drug Abuse Recognition, and Gang Tracking, among others; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Officer May took the time to individually reach out to youth in need and made extra efforts beyond his required duties to personally follow up with young people he had worked with who were struggling and facing difficult life circumstances; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Officer May will always be remembered for his dedication and commitment to serving the public and making a positive difference in the lives of others. We extend our gratitude to his wife and children for the sacrifices they have made so that many people could be touched by Officer May’s life and work. Officer May will be greatly missed and the spirit of his courage and sacrifice to his community will live well beyond his years on earth. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates January 12, 2006, as Officer Richard Allen May Day and extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and the community. | ||||
