PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MARCH 2006 AS

 

ARTS EDUCATION MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

 

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   
 

WHEREAS, ARTS EDUCATION, which includes dance, literature, music, theater, and the visual arts, is an essential part of basic education for all students, kindergarten through grade twelve, providing balanced learning and developing the full potential of their minds; and

   
 

WHEREAS, experience in the arts develops insights and abilities central to the experience of life, and the arts are collectively one of the most important repositories of culture; and

   
 

WHEREAS, ARTS EDUCATION focuses on a variety of learning styles which can engage students who might otherwise fail and, when the arts are central to the learning environment, school becomes a place of discovery and conditions for leaning improve; and

   
 

WHEREAS, education in the arts trains students in complex thinking, including finding novel and creative solutions when the path from beginning to end may not be known; and

   
 

WHEREAS, ARTS EDUCATION helps to prepare students to become successful members of the 21st Century workforce by offering many opportunities to develop marketable skills with considerable earnings potential; and

   
 

WHEREAS, an education in the arts teaches students how to work cooperatively with others, to better comprehend and value diverse cultures,

 
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, designates the month of March 2006 as ARTS EDUCATION MONTH and encourages all county school districts and arts organizations to celebrate the arts with meaningful student activities and programs that demonstrate, to the public, that learning and understanding in the arts is essential.
