Resolution Approving the Waste Reduction/Resource Conservation and Educational Grants Program and Guidelines, and Authorizing the Director of Public Works to Approve Individual Grants in Amounts Not to Exceed $25,000 as May be Approved Pursuant to Said Guidelines

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, this Board has adopted its Shared Vision 2010 with one of its goals to preserve and enhance important natural resources through environmental stewardship; and

WHEREAS, this Board has also adopted a sustainable building policy, which requires that new County buildings be designed and constructed to the highest practicable Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards to support the goals of its Shared Vision 2010; and

WHEREAS, this Board has also authorized the County’s participation in the Sustainable Silicon Valley Initiative and committed to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in support of the goals in its Shared Vision 2010; and

WHEREAS, this Board has also approved other programs to reduce waste and to conserve natural resources; and

WHEREAS, there has been presented to this Board a proposed Waste Reduction/Resource Conservation and Educational Grants Program and Guidelines which is proposed to finance programs that will reduce waste, conserve natural resources and help inform underserved populations in the County of the benefits and needs of reducing waste and conserving natural resources; and

WHEREAS, the Director of Public Works, has recommended that the Grants Program and Guidelines be approved and that he be authorized to approve grants from said program in amount not to exceed $25,000; and

WHEREAS, this Board has reviewed said proposed Grants Program and Guidelines and has considered and concurs with the recommendation of the Director of Public Works.

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that this Board hereby:

a)

Authorizes the implementation of a Waste Reduction/Resource Conservation and Educational Grants Program.

b)

Approves the Grant Guidelines as attached hereto and made a part hereof.

c)

Authorizes the Director of Public Works to develop grant application forms and have them approved by County Counsel for form.

d)

Authorizes the Director of Public Works to approve individual grants in amounts not to exceed $25,000 as may be approved pursuant to said Guidelines.

e)

Authorizes the Director of Public Works to use Solid Waste funds up to the amount appropriated by this Board to finance said approved grants.
