RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING

Michele Garside

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Michele Garside has spent her entire professional career as an educator of children, first as a teacher, then as a principal, retiring in December 2005 as superintendent of the Pacifica School District; and

   

WHEREAS, Michele’s efforts toward ensuring high-quality education for all youth, especially those from low-income families, has earned her recognition statewide as a leader in the field; and

   

WHEREAS, Michele first audited PSD’s curriculum, followed by collaborating with teacher, staff and parents to create and implement a strategic plan; and

   

WHEREAS, PSD’s plan has resulted in Pacifica students scoring higher over the past five years in literacy and math than countywide as well as statewide averages; and

   

WHEREAS, Michele’s reputation as a tireless educator is perhaps surpassed only by her reputation as an artist and entertainer bringing joy to audiences ranging from those at a local theater to those in hospitals and retirement centers; and

   

WHEREAS, Michele is a genuine leader, who has truly made a difference in her community and throughout San Mateo County.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Michele Garside upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Michele and her family sincere wishes for continued excellence.

RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING

Mary Frances Hollis

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Mary Frances Hollis retired after four decades in San Mateo County as a teacher of math and science; and

   

WHEREAS, Mary is an acknowledged pioneer in encouraging girls to pursue interests in math and science, doing so long before society recognized the importance of such encouragement; and

   

WHEREAS, Mary has attended NASA’s Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, and has worked with the space agency to improve her lessons, including a trip for fourth graders to Cape Canaveral in Florida and a visit to San Mateo County by samples of rocks astronauts collected from the moon; and

   

WHEREAS, Mary’s efforts has earned wide recognition, including NASA’s “Down to Earth” award, inclusion in Who’s Who in America and Teacher of the Year honors from the California Association of Aerospace Educators; and

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Mary Frances Hollis upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Mary and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE FAMILY OF

Ruth Kruidenier

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Ruth Kruidenier left San Mateo County with a legacy of multiple models of public service for all to emulate; and

   

WHEREAS, Ruth founded the League of Women Voters of North San Mateo County, served as its first president and remained a leader of the group for 50 years; and

   

WHEREAS, Ruth was a founding member of the San Bruno Friends of the Library and was the San Bruno City Council’s representative to the Peninsula Library System’s advisory board; and

   

WHEREAS, on a weekly basis, Ruth was consistently seen wearing her trademark yellow gloves, while cleaning and sorting books for fundraising sales; and

   

WHEREAS, through her church, Ruth helped at a homeless shelter for families, adding personal touches such as making sure all linens were smoothed and every pillow held a wrapped piece of candy; and

   

WHEREAS, Ruth exemplified the best in civic and community involvement in San Mateo County and remains an example of strength, integrity, intelligence and above all else, a heart filled with warmth and love for others.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates the family of Ruth Kruidenier upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Ruth’s family its heartfelt gratitude and deep respect for her memory.

Patricia Lee

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Patricia Lee has been a San Mateo County resident for a quarter century, choosing to rebuild and stay in Redwood City even after a devastating fire; and

   

WHEREAS, Patricia holds leadership positions with the Bay Area United Way and the Bay Area Legal Aid Society, whose regions include San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, Patricia is an acknowledged trailblazer in ensuring equal access to justice for women, minorities and low-income individuals and families, while her Office of Women’s Advocacy serves residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties; and

   

WHEREAS, Patricia’s award-winning efforts include working with the California bar to design a Leadership Academy and to create a mentoring program for female inmates in county jails as well as encouraging fellow lawyers to accept more pro bono work; and

   

WHEREAS, Patricia has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Bay Area United Way, and has received the Unsung Hero Award presented by the Santa Clara County Bar Association.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Patricia Lee upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Patricia and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.
