THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 2006

 

ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the month of April 2006 is National Alcohol Awareness Month; and,

   

WHEREAS, alcohol abuse is a serious and treatable public health problem affecting persons of all ages, races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds; and

   

WHEREAS, untreated alcoholism likely affects up to 900 of our San Mateo County Staff and their dependents and alcohol abuse causes over 750 lost days of county work time at a cost of over $125,000; and

   

WHEREAS, in San Mateo County estimates are that over a million and a half dollars in health related costs are incurred yearly and alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among persons ages 10-24: motor vehicle crashes, unintentional injures, homicide and suicide; and

   

WHEREAS, persons in recovery are leading sober, productive lives and contribute to the community as a result of their efforts and those of the service providers; and

 

WHEREAS, in recognizing these efforts, the County of San Mateo joins the effort to educate the community and policy makers about the success of treatment and prevention; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County does hereby proclaim the month of April 2006, ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH and urges its employees and citizens to take advantage of county and private assistance for the intervention and treatment of alcohol related problems and to support efforts that will encourage recovery throughout our community.
