SUBJECT:

Acceptance of a Donation of a Currency Counting and Scanning Machine.

RECOMMENDATION

Adopt a resolution authorizing the President of the Board to accept a donation from the San Mateo County Bail Agents Association of a currency counting and scanning machine and accompanying printer valued at $3,126.00. This equipment has already been purchased and is ready to be presented to the County.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

The Sheriff’s Office maintains a cashier’s office in the Maguire Correctional Facility. The cashier handles a large amount of cash related to bail and inmate account transactions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The current money counting machine is an old model that does not have the capabilities of the new donated machine.

The donor has contacted the Sheriff's Office and indicated that they would like to donate a brand new Cummins JetScan Currency Scanner model 4062 and an accompanying printer. This machine can count up to 1,500 bills per minute and features a “facing” feature, the ability to count mixed bills simultaneously and a bill sorting feature. The printer will make reconciliation of each shift’s receipts faster and more accurate.

This equipment will enhance the operation of the Maguire Correctional Facility and will allow us to transfer the current cash counting machine over to the Women’s Correctional Center, enhancing their cashier operation.

VISION ALIGNMENT

Accepting this donation of a cash counter and scanner aligns with Goals No. 2 and 7 by encouraging civic engagement and volunteerism, as well as maintaining and enhancing public safety of all residents and visitors.

FISCAL IMPACT

The only cost would be the annual maintenance costs that would be covered under the current Sheriff’s Office budget. Therefore, there is no effect on the net County cost.
