RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 81, CALIFORNIA READING AND LITERACY IMPROVEMENT AND PUBLIC LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION BOND ACT OF 2006

______________________________________________________________

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, SB 1161 (Alpert, 2004), approved by the California Senate (28:9) and Assembly (57:15) and signed into law by the Governor, submits to voters the California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act (the Act) of 2006; and

WHEREAS, the California State Library has identified approximately $2 billion in library infrastructure needs statewide including needs in the County of San Mateo; and

WHEREAS, the Half Moon Bay Library, a branch of the San Mateo County Library, received the highest rating in the third application cycle of the 2000 Library Bond Act, but due to a lack of funding was not awarded, which will likely make it a strong candidate for priority funding in the 2006 Library Bond Act; and

WHEREAS, approval by voters of the 2006 Library Bond Act would authorize the State of California to sell $600 million in bonds to assist local governments in the construction of public libraries;

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this resolution hereby supports Proposition 81, The California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2006.
