PROCLAMATION HONORING AND COMMENDING

 

APRIL 23 – APRIL 29, 2006

AS

VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK

IN SAN MATEO COUNTY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

 

WHEREAS, victims of crime across our nation need and deserve support and assistance to help them cope with the aftermath of crime and National Crime VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK – April 23 through April 29, 2006 – offers all the opportunity to promote strength in unity in serving victims and survivors of crime, and recognizing their rights as victims; and

   
 

WHEREAS, victims and survivors of crime can gain strength from the wide range of support services offered by over 10,000 community and justice system-based programs, and the more than 32,000 federal and state statues that define and protect victims’ rights; and

   
 

WHEREAS, America has demonstrated its caring and compassion for victims of crime, from individuals who provide support to a victim in need, to community collaborations that results in comprehensive services for victims of violence; and

   
 

WHEREAS, by being united against crime and for victims’ rights and services, we gain strength as individuals, as communities, and as a nation, and offer strength to victims who seek to recover from the often devastating effects of crime; and

   
 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County operates a Victim Center Program that last year processed over 4,200 victim referrals from law enforcement, had contact with 2,000 new victims, and provided claims assistance to victims over 2,200 times; and

   
 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County remains united in our commitment to ensure that all crime victims and survivors are treated with compassion and respect, have a voice within our system of justice, and are afforded services that provide help as well as hope,

 
 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, does hereby designate the week of April 23 - April 29, 2006 as VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK in San Mateo County.
