THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF MAY 2006 AS

SAN MATEO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VOTER REGISTRATION MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   

WHEREAS the Board of Supervisors Shared Vision 2010 identifies Civic Engagement as a primary goal, as it helps us realize the potential of our County’s diverse population through voting, public service, charitable giving, and participation in public discussions of important issues; and

   

WHEREAS, the Elections Office promotes civic involvement in the election process by registering eligible voters and conducting honest and accurate elections on behalf of the citizens of San Mateo County and accomplishes this by working in partnership with the League of Women Voters and other groups; and

   

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County League of Women Voters has a special program designed to engage younger voters who are typically less likely to vote, and by working with our government teachers, they are conducting civic education and voter registration efforts to encourage eligible high school seniors to cast their very first vote in the June 2006 Gubernatorial Primary; and

 

WHEREAS, the curriculum teaches all high school seniors, not just eligible senior voters, how to participate in the election process, how and when to register to vote, how to vote by mail, how to find information about candidates and issues, how to locate their polling place and how to find election results on the night of the election; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County Schools, working in partnership with the League of Women Voters, meet their promise to prepare students for citizenship and encourage their participation and leadership in our democracy; and

   

WHEREAS, together, we encourage all students of the legal voting age to register and take part in the June 2006 Gubernatorial Primary, to become educated on the issues before them and to join in the democratic decision making practice that takes place when citizens cast their ballots on Election Day, this year and for the rest of their lives,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that this Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County hereby designates the month of May 2006 as SAN MATEO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VOTER REGISTRATION MONTH and, further, encourages all students to register, to vote and to exercise this precious right guaranteed by the Constitution of this United States of America.
