PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MAY 2006 AS | ||||
Older Americans Month | ||||

WHEREAS, the month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month to highlight and acknowledge the unique contributions of seniors to us, our local communities as well as to our nation; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in compliance with the Older Americans Act, established the San Mateo County Commission on Aging on November 12, 1969; and | ||||
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Commission on Aging has advised the Board and worked extensively on senior issues, including health and nutrition, affordable and accessible housing, employment opportunities, legislation, elder abuse, transportation, and new resources and services; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the number of San Mateo County residents age 60 and older accounts for approximately 17.4 percent of the county’s population of 688,847 (2004 est.), and is expected to almost double by 2030, while the number of San Mateo County residents age 85-plus is expected to grow by nearly 140 percent by 2030; and | ||||
WHEREAS, seniors possess a wealth of experience and historical knowledge, making them a crucial component of the ties that link individuals with family, and in-turn with the overall community. Older Americans have contributed greatly to all aspects of society and deserve to have their rights and privileges protected. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates May 2006 as Older Americans Month in San Mateo County. The Board also joins the U.S. Administration on Aging in encouraging all San Mateo County citizens to observe this month by showing appreciation and respect to all of our older Americans. | ||||
