BACKGROUND:

On January 4, 2005, your Board adopted a Resolution accepting a grant from the Peninsula Foundation in the amount of $40,000 to fund transportation between San Mateo Medical Center and University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. This new program was initiated at SMMC to make available to patients the opportunity to receive comprehensive dental care. Adverse dental conditions affect chronic disease and put patients at increased medical risk. Complete dental care cannot be provided at SMMC. Therefore, collaboration with University of the Pacific School of Dentistry was established.

DISCUSSION:

San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) has received a new grant award of $40,000 to provide a second-year support of dental care for low income residents of San Mateo County through a program involving diagnosis, screening, and transportation to the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry.

The Resolution will allow the County to accept the grant award and appropriate the funds that will pay for the continued provision of services specified by the program.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The maximum amount of the Grant is $40,000. San Mateo Medical Center will receive $20,000 following acceptance of the Grant and $20,000 after SMMC has submitted a narrative and a fiscal report. The term of the Grant Agreement is March 1, 2006 through February 28, 2007. This ATR will appropriate $20,000 in the SMMC FY2005-06 Budget. There is no net county cost associated with this grant.
