Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Neil R. Cullen, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT:

Installation of Four-Way Stop Signs at 8th Street (County Road No. 1137) and East Avenue (County Road No. 1153) – Montara Area

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of four-way stop signs at the intersection of 8th Street and East Avenue.

Vision Alignment

Commitment: Ensure basic health and safety for all.

Goal(s): Maintain and enhance public safety of all residents and visitors.

We believe the installation of four-way stop signs will provide for the orderly flow of traffic through this intersection.

Background

We received a request by a resident in the area concerned with the safety of motorists and pedestrians entering the intersection of 8th Street and East Avenue. We evaluated the intersection and determined that the sight distance of the intersection is limited by the steep uphill grade of 8th Street.

Discussion

We believe that the installation of four-way stop signs is appropriate, as it will address the limited sight distance for motorists approaching this intersection, at the same time, address the concerns expressed by the resident.

We have notified all property owners within three hundred feet (300’) of the intersection of the date when your Board is scheduled to consider our report and recommendation. We have also mailed a copy of this report to the MidCoast Community Council.

A resolution has been approved as to form by County Counsel.

Fiscal Impact

The installation of stop signs is estimated to cost $400. This installation will be funded with Road Funds that have been appropriated this fiscal year to finance small road related improvements or traffic related installations.

There is no impact on the General Fund.
