Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Nancy Steiger, Chief Executive Officer, San Mateo Medical Center

SUBJECT:

Acceptance of two gifts over $100,000 from the San Mateo Medical Center Foundation

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a resolution accepting two gifts from the San Mateo Medical Center Foundation: 5 replacement monitors for patient care rooms valued at $135,000 and 20 replacement beds for 2 A/B valued at $115,000.

VISION ALIGNMENT:

Commitment: Ensure basic health and safety for all

Goal 5: Residents have access to healthcare and preventative care

These gifts contribute to this commitment and goal by providing residents with well-kept and modernized patient rooms.

BACKGROUND:

Administrative Memorandum B-3 requires that all gifts having a value over $2,500 be referred to the Board for approval. Given the nature of the relationship between the San Mateo Medical Foundation and San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) and the high volume of gifts, usually in the form of medical equipment from the Foundation to SMMC, your Board adopted a Resolution on September 13, 2005 which authorized the Chief Executive Officer of SMMC to accept gifts with a value not to exceed $100,000. Any gifts above $100,000 are to be authorized by the Board.

DISCUSSION

Hospitals require constant updating in medical technology and capital equipment to stay current in the industry. San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) has capital needs that far exceed its ability to pay for them. The Foundation has been an invaluable asset in keeping SMMC current in medical technology and equipment. The 20 replacement beds and 5 replacement monitors that the Foundation is proposing to provide SMMC will have an immediate impact on patient health and safety at SMMC.

Please find attached a letter to Peggy Lucas, dated April 25, 2006, which delineates the number of gifts being offered by the Foundation which totals $499,000.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Acceptance of these two gifts will have no net County cost.
