RESOLUTION

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

EL CONCILIO OF SAN MATEO COUNTY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, At the request of Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson, El Concilio of San Mateo County (El Concilio) established and operated a Day Worker Program from May 2005 through June 2006; and

WHEREAS, El Concilio provided matching services between employers seeking day labor help and workers seeking employment 6 days a week from the hours of 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, 468 individuals were registered during the first contract period and an additional 307 registered during the second contract period totaling an impressive 775 registered day workers; and

WHEREAS, In the first 5 months of operation, 282 jobs were available for 509 individuals, thereafter 853 jobs were made available for 1,446 job seekers; and

WHEREAS, El Concilio provided other services at the Day Worker Center including computer classes, vocational English and classes on the “tools of the trades”; and

WHEREAS, “Charlas” (chats) were also conducted to better prepare workers for successful employment and safe living; and

WHEREAS, Extensive outreach was made to employers, contractors and business owners to inform them of the Day Worker Program and services; and

WHEREAS, Day Workers were also referred to numerous other programs provided by El Concilio and other service organizations; and

WHEREAS, El Concilio works in the spirit of collaboration and provides many services including a Training Program for Promotores de Salud (Community Health Educators):

HIV/AIDS Outreach and Case Management

Emergency Services in East Palo Alto

Get Fit Collaborative in East Palo Alto

Asthma Task Force

Obesity Task Force

Youth Collaborative in EPA

Energy Education Program and Weatherization

South San Francisco Partnership and Health Committee

WHEREAS, El Concilio has received several awards including the Local Heroes Award for KQED (Gloria Flores-Garcia) and the Peninsula Interfaith Action (PIA) award (Ortensia Lopez).

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby expresses sincere gratitude and appreciation for El Concilio’s dedication and outstanding contributions to San Mateo County residents and wishes them continued success in the future.
