Background / Discussion

Pain management services are provided under the general direction of the Medical Director of San Mateo Medical Center. Such care includes the assessment and treatment of chronic pain syndrome. Comprehensive pain management is a new service being offered at the San Mateo Medical Center.

The establishment of a pain management service is a cost containment approach for the assessment and treatment of patients with chronic pain syndrome and concurrent substance abuse issues, including back pain, headaches, cancer, and rheumatologic pain. A multidisciplinary team shall provide specific medical and behavioral health services while measuring outcome-based results analyzing frequency of emergency department visits, hospitalization, and improved patient quality of life and functionality.

The Agreement includes all provisions that are required by county ordinance and administrative memoranda, including but not limited to insurance, hold harmless, non-discrimination, equal benefits and jury service policy.

Risk Management and County Counsel have approved the Agreement.

Term and Fiscal Impact

The term of the agreement is from August 1, 2006 through July 31, 2007. The maximum amount County shall be obligated to reimburse Contractors under this agreement is $240,000. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center's FY2006-07 tentatively adopted budget.
