RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING | ||||
Burlingame High School New Construction and Modernization Project | ||||

WHEREAS, Burlingame High School, one of the six comprehensive high schools in the San Mateo Union High School District, has been providing excellent academic and extracurricular programs to students for eighty-three years; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Burlingame High School, a California Distinguished School, is now ranked in the top 1.5% of high schools in America by Newsweek Magazine based on the large number of students enrolled in the School’s Advanced Placement Courses, regularly graduates 97% of its students to college (including a record-setting 63% to four-year colleges in 2006) and has been recognized nationally as a Jefferson Award School for Public Service due to the School’s outstanding community service program; and | ||||
WHEREAS, voters in the San Mateo Union High School District approved in 2000 the $137.5 million dollar Measure D Bond that the District leveraged with other resources to provide a $234.5 million capital improvement program, of which $36 million was allocated for new construction and modernization at Burlingame High School; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the projects include a large new library building and a new two-story classroom building that emulate the historical look of the original, newly remodeled main campus building housing student services and classrooms, and the Burlingame High School faculty and staff, supported by the Board of Trustees, demonstrate a strong and enthusiastic commitment to all students being well prepared for advanced education and socially responsible citizenship; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Burlingame High School has in place a volunteer Citizen Oversight Committee appointed by the Board of Trustees to monitor the expenditure of Measure D funds on the new construction and modernization; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the Measure D modernization and new construction at Burlingame High School is made possible because the Board of Trustees, Superintendent-Retired Thomas C. Mohr, Superintendent Samuel Johnson, Jr., local community leaders, elected officials, parents, school staff, and the public at large volunteered and persevered through several elections to do that which is in the best interest of youth attending high school in the San Mateo Union High School District. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on September 16, 2006, hereby honors and commends the San Mateo Union High School District and Burlingame High School for fulfilling the promise to voters to provide extensive modernization at Burlingame High School to allow for a safe and modern teaching and learning environment. | ||||
