THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2006 AS

COASTAL CLEANUP DAY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Coastal Cleanup Day has become an annual event providing an opportunity to recognize the need to protect the ecological health and beauty of San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, plastic litter such as food wrappers, beverage containers, cigarettes and smoking related materials comprise 60% - 80% of the debris found in the annual Coastal Cleanup Day and are the majority of trash found in our watersheds and shorelines and have repercussions on coastal economic activities, particularly tourism; and

   

WHEREAS, plastic debris, especially cigarette butts which contain 165 toxic chemicals, threaten water quality, public safety and aquatic ecosystems and are a transport mechanism for toxic substances in the marine environment and this ingestion of this material by animals can cause malnutrition, starvation and even death; and

   

WHEREAS, Coastal Cleanup Day is a way for all residents of San Mateo County to join the effort to protect our beautiful coastlines by joining the effort to remove litter from our beaches, creeks, shorelines, streets, parks and neighborhoods thereby reducing the harmful impacts caused by both litter and urban runoff, and restoring the natural beauty of our watersheds;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby declares September 16th, 2006 as “Coastal Cleanup Day” in San Mateo County.
