BACKGROUND:

For many years the County has contracted with the Historical Association for operation of the Historical Museum and the historical sites. This contract provides that the Association:

Maintains the San Mateo County Historical Museum and keeps it open to the public for at least one-half day, five days a week.

Provides information to the public concerning the history, growth, and development of the County.

Provides interpretive programs at the Sanchez Adobe and Woodside Store Historical Sites and ensures that the Woodside Store is open to the public at least 16 hours a week and the Sanchez Adobe is open to the public at least 22 hours a week.

Provides appropriate professional curatorial assistance at all three museums as staff resources allow.

Provides coordination and support of County sesquicentennial celebrations such as providing the services of a coordinator, production of programs, exhibitions and publications and other coordination and support tasks.

DISCUSSION:

The Historical Association contract for fiscal year 2005/06 had been increased from the prior year due to additional appropriation by the Board of Supervisors at the Recommended Budget Hearings in consideration of previous reductions and support of the sesquicentennial celebrations. Fiscal year 2006/07 is the second and final year for the conditional appropriation for the additional services provided for the sesquicentennial celebrations. The levels of service provided by the Historical Association remain the same as they were in FY2005/06.

The Agreement has been reviewed by County Counsel.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The total amount of the contract is $150,000, which encompasses $120,000 for general services and an appropriation of $30,000 for sesquicentennial support. This amount has been budgeted in the Parks and Recreation Division’s FY 2006/07 budget.
