THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DECLARING

 

RECOVERY HAPPENS MONTH

 

SEPTEMBER 2006

WHEREAS, Alcohol and Drug Addiction is a major public health problem that can and does affect all people and families in our communities; and

   
 

WHEREAS, Untreated addiction contributes to violent and destructive behavior, crime, child neglect and abuse, unsafe driving, school dropouts, suicide, crime, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, dysfunctional families, poverty, joblessness, homelessness, unwanted pregnancy, ill health, mental illness, HIV infection, Hepatitis and other deadly infectious diseases; and

   
 

WHEREAS, Alcohol and drugs are the third leading cause of death in the nation, and

   
 

WHEREAS, Treatment and Recovery Programs can reduce unnecessary state health care costs of lost productivity and increase state productivity by getting more workers into recovery, reduce the number of people in jail and prisons, reduce street and gang violence, reduce school drop out rates, reducing violence, reduce the cost of crime, the rate of recidivism, and the burden on law enforcement officials; and reduce the total financial drain on our economy, and improve the quality of life for individuals and society as a whole; and

   
 

WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of individuals are living sober productive lives and contributing to the community as a result of prevention, treatment and recovery services.

   
 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Alcohol and Drug Treatment Providers Coalition has dedicated themselves to be advocates of substance abuse treatment, to educate the public and policymakers about the effectiveness of treatment, both societal and financial, and to decrease barriers to treatment, and

   
 

WHEREAS, the County Board of Supervisors commends the San Mateo County Alcohol and Drug Treatment Providers Coalition in their effort to assist San Mateo County residents in recovery from addiction and promote the need for better treatment access.

 
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo does hereby commend the San Mateo County Alcohol and Drug Treatment Providers Coalition and their efforts during September 2006, “Recovery Happens Month”.
