THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING OCTOBER 2006 AS

ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY:

SAN MATEO COUNTY READS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County commemorates 150 years of fostering literacy, supporting literature and the arts, and celebrating the diversity of its populace during this Sesquicentennial Anniversary; and

   

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo, a member of the San Mateo County Library Joint Powers Authority, recognizes the talents and contributions of its immigrants, numbering one third of its total population, and residents of San Mateo County are part of a robust community of readers as evidenced by San Mateo County Library’s circulation of 2,922,080 books in the last fiscal year; and

   

WHEREAS, the renowned novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, embodies many of the great themes of literature, including love, honor, betrayal and redemption and The Kite Runner brings to life the history and culture of Afghanistan, and chronicles the adjustments of an Afghan immigrant family to life in its adopted state, California; and

 

WHEREAS, author Khaled Hosseini was himself an immigrant to the Bay Area, and as a practicing physician has contributed to the well-being of our populace, and as a writer has enriched our understanding of the world; and

   

WHEREAS, all the libraries of San Mateo County have come together to produce a community read known as “ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY: SAN MATEO COUNTY READS The Kite Runner” to celebrate Hosseini’s highly acclaimed book; and

   

WHEREAS, library programs strengthen community bonds by bringing together people from all walks of life to ponder and discuss powerful works of literature and ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY: SAN MATEO COUNTY READS is planned as annual event that our residents will eagerly anticipate,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors proclaims October 2006 as ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY: SAN MATEO COUNTY READS MONTH, and encourages all residents of San Mateo County to read The Kite Runner and attend the fall library programs which will provide opportunities to share personal stories, discuss the book’s timely themes, and address its relevance to San Mateo County.
