PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2006 AS

 
VOTER EDUCATION AND PARTICIPATION MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

 

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   
 

WHEREAS; The California Association of Clerks and Election Officials (CACEO) and Secretary of State Bruce McPherson have worked as partners to encourage all eligible citizens to register and vote, and;

   
 

WHEREAS; the month of October 2006 has been designated as “VOTER EDUCATION AND PARTICIPATION MONTH” for the November 7, 2006 General Election, and; the strength and vitality of a democratic society depends on the “consent of the governed” and that consent is given at the ballot box, and;

   
 

WHEREAS; the County of San Mateo supports programs to provide nonpartisan information to citizens to encourage them to participate in the election process, including how and when to register to vote, how to vote by mail, how to find information about candidates and issues, how to locate the appropriate polling place, and how to find election results on the night of the election, and;

 
 

WHEREAS; the San Mateo County Elections Office has an extensive media campaign, voter education projects to introduce the community to the new eSlate voting equipment, a voter registration partnership with the League of Women Voters to increase voter registration among high school students, the DemocracyLive! Program, a student poll worker program, the Peninsula Democracy Corp to provide last minute poll worker support from county and city employees, a partnership with Comcast & PenTV to bring election information and election night coverage of local, state and national results and maintains a wealth of information on its website, www.shapethefuture.org, to communicate and educate residents, students, voters and poll workers and to facilitate community involvement and increase voter participation,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this honorable Board of Supervisors of County of San Mateo officially proclaims October as “VOTER EDUCATION AND PARTICIPATION MONTH” and directs the Clerk of the Board to forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of State, and

   
 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this San Mateo County Board of Supervisors takes great pride in joining its Chief Elections Officer in encouraging all eligible citizens to register for and vote in the November 7, 2006 General Election to shape their future and strengthen our community.
