PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 AS | ||||
TAKAHASHI MARKET DAYIN CELEBRATION OF THE 100TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF OPERATION | ||||

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that | ||||
WHEREAS, the history of the TAKAHASHI MARKET began when Tokutaro Takahashi recognized that the growing population of Japanese on the Peninsula were in need of products and supplies specific to their culture and, although Mr. Takahashi was formerly a salt mine laborer, he decided to meet those needs; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Mr. Takahashi started his business 100 years ago as a peddling operation with a horse and cart, in which he displayed groceries, clothing and fishing equipment; and | ||||
WHEREAS, with the success of his business, Mr. Takahashi was able to evolve his operation from mobile to permanent with the opening of an actual market, which quickly became a community gathering spot; and | ||||
WHEREAS, over the years the operation of TAKAHASHI MARKET has been handed down from generation to generation and has continuously maintained its extraordinary reputation as a reliable, family-owned and run business that specializes in products and foods to sustain the Japanese and the Hawaiian communities; and | ||||
WHEREAS, for 100 years as the TAKAHASHI MARKET has been located in various storefronts in the county and has achieved great success by meeting the ever-changing needs of the community as well as facing disheartening challenges, such as its closure during World War II when the Takahashi family was interned in camps in San Bruno and Utah, yet it has sustained and become the important landmark it is today in downtown San Mateo, | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim the day of SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 as “TAKAHASHI MARKET DAY” and gratefully commends the Takahashi family for its perseverance, dedication and loyalty in serving the community with the highest standard of business practices and wishes them continued success in the years to come. | ||||
