PROCLAIMS | ||||
OCTOBER 2006 AS | ||||
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH | ||||
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * | ||||
WHEREAS, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to U.S. women between 15-44 years of age; and | ||||
WHEREAS, last year in San Mateo County 177 women and children were provided shelter to escape domestic violence and hundreds of others were turned away due to lack of space; and | ||||
WHEREAS, there were 2,680 domestic violence related 911 calls to law enforcement last year in San Mateo County; and | ||||
WHEREAS, last year in San Mateo County, there were over 4,500 calls to service providers for abused women; and | ||||
WHEREAS, experts estimate that intimate partner violence costs U.S. businesses between $3 and $5 billion annually in lost time and productivity and, nationally, intimate partner violence health related costs exceed $5.8 billion each year; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) provides bilingual crisis intervention and prevention services including legal assistance, emergency and transitional housing, counseling, a 24-hour crisis hot line, outreach and education and prevention services; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the community of San Mateo County is committed to eliminating all forms of family abuse and violence. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates the month of October 2006 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and encourages all citizens of San Mateo County to support the effort to rid our community of domestic violence. | ||||
