COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2006 AS

 
DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

 

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   
 

WHEREAS, there are over 56 million Americans with disabilities and of that number, 117,000 are residents of San Mateo County; and

   
 

WHEREAS, 2006 marks 16 years since the passage of the landmark civil rights legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990; and

   
 

WHEREAS, this month will heighten the public’s awareness of people with disabilities and will focus on the significant contributions of people with disabilities throughout San Mateo County; and

 
 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities (CoD) consists of 21 Commissioners appointed by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors representing developmental, physical, mental, sensory, and other areas of disabilities; and

   
 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities, as an advisor to the Board of Supervisors, provides the opportunity for people with disabilities to influence and participate in the development of public policy,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that this Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, hereby designates October 2006 as DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH in San Mateo County and invites all citizens to participate in related activities and events.
