RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE WINNERS OF THE 2006 HIGH SCHOOL SEAT BELT CHALLENGE SPONSORED BY THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, nationally each year over 5,000 teenagers die in automobile crashes, and over two-thirds of those fatally injured are not wearing seat belts; and

 

WHEREAS, lap/shoulder belts when used properly can reduce by 50% the likelihood of fatal or serious injuries; and

 

WHEREAS, the High School Seat Belt Challenge Program charges teens to develop seat belt awareness campaigns aimed at increasing seat belt use by their peers; and

 

WHEREAS, during the 2006 High School Seat Belt Challenge, the students of Aragon, Burlingame, Half Moon Bay, Mills, and Sequoia High Schools had the opportunity to engage in friendly competition, while at the same time practicing the potentially life-saving and simple behavior of using seat belts; and

 

WHEREAS, Sequoia High School had the highest overall seat belt use rate of 95.5% and is the first place winner of the 2006 competition; and

 

WHEREAS, the second place winner is Half Moon Bay High School with a rate of 94.9% and Mills High School places third with a 92.1% seat belt rate:

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the President of the Board of Supervisors is hereby authorized to acknowledge the winners of the 2006 San Mateo County High School Seat Belt Challenge and present to them with their trophies and cash awards.
