WHEREAS, since before the arrival of Europeans, people have recognized Brisbane’s valley, named Caņada de Guadalupe by the Spanish, as a place well-suited for life as the overall area offered shelter as well as food; and

WHEREAS, milestones along the valley’s colorful early history include names such as Robert Ridley, Charles Crocker, Joaquin Murieta, Emile and Julie Allemand, Joseph and Charles Mozzetti, the Sweets and the Naughton families; and

WHEREAS, originally proposed as the City of Visitacion, Brisbane quickly grew in the aftermath of the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake, expanding from just five families in the early 20th Century to some 2,500 residents by 1940 and more than 5,000 during World War II; and

WHEREAS, through the war years and into the 1950s, Brisbane continued to evolve in terms of population, amenities, services and civic organizations and events, including the once-popular Western Days festival; and

WHEREAS, as the community matured and began to consolidate itself into a municipal entity, enough residents sounded the call for incorporation that by May 1960 public meetings on the topic started to take place and on Sept. 12, 1961, Brisbane voters chose incorporation 710-296; and

WHEREAS, the City of Brisbane retains vestiges of its rural roots and small-town charm as a unique community nestled on the eastern slope of San Bruno Mountain; it remains an oasis of green surrounded by urban asphalt and concrete; a gem for san Mateo County and the Bay Area as a whole.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates the City of Brisbane upon the 45th Anniversary of Incorporation and hereby extends sincere wishes for continued economic prosperity and vitality for many more decades to come.
