RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING | ||||
ELIZABETH K. GHELETA | ||||

UPON HER RETIREMENT FROM THE SERVICE LEAGUE OF SAN MATEO COUNTY | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA has dedicated her career to the Service League of San Mateo County assisting inmates and their families for the past 38 years; and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA served as Executive Director of the Service League of San Mateo County for the past 28 years where under her direction the Service League has made San Mateo County a safer place to live by offering inmates the skills and support they need to successfully return to the community; and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA with the support of the Service League Board, volunteer involvement and dedicated staff, led the agency into property ownership and fiscal stability resulting in a well-established, non-profit community organization with 25 staff and over 500 volunteers; and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA developed the trust and confidence of previous and current County Sheriffs for needed innovations like the Children’s Waiting Room at the County Jail, alternatives to incarceration (Windows of Opportunity), alcohol and drug treatment (Hope House), sober living and environment for men (FAR House); and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA, together with current County Sheriff Don Horsley was encouraged to expand the Service League’s in-jail services: educational, religious services, substance abuse counseling, re-entry and life skills. Today, League employees and volunteers provide over 800 educational, religious and self-improvement programs a year in the men’s and women’s jails; and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA and her staff developed four residential facilities for former inmates and started programs to assist the children and families of inmates. During the holidays they provide presents to inmates’ children and holiday bags with homemade cookies; and | ||||
WHEREAS, ELIZABETH K. GHELETA’S vision of improved inmate services has resulted in model programs that affect issues of chemical dependency, personal responsibility, education, permanent housing and family life skills giving hundreds of former inmates and their families a second chance in life. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, honors ELIZABETH K. GHELETA for her leadership and passionate commitment to public service, healthy families and the San Mateo County community. We wish her the best in all future endeavors. | ||||
