CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS WEEK | ||||

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that | ||||
WHEREAS, seventy-seven years ago during the depths of the Great Depression, the CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION was formed by Laura E. Settle with the goal of relieving the economic hardships suffered by RETIRED TEACHERS and has since become a leading advocate for providing teachers with sufficient retirement income; and | ||||
WHEREAS, CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION also provides continuing support to active and future teachers, including scholarships of nearly $400,000 a year; and | ||||
WHEREAS, a vast majority of California’s RETIRED TEACHERS share a commitment to improve their communities through volunteer activities; and | ||||
WHEREAS, when the President called on all Americans to give more of their time to volunteer service, RETIRED TEACHERS led by example, including dozens of members who have given more than 30,000 hours of services; and | ||||
WHEREAS, RETIRED TEACHERS can be found serving their communities by volunteer tutoring, participation in Gateway reading and HeadStart programs, service as hospital and hospice aides, providing transportation for the blind, collecting food and clothing for the needy, caring for children of pregnant teenagers so that the teens may complete their schooling, and a host of other activities; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in San Mateo County, Division 22 of the CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION has donated a total of 30,445 volunteer hours, which equals $549,228; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the annual dollar value of volunteer time donated throughout the state by RETIRED TEACHERS exceeded $44 million during the most recent reporting period for 2006, | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that, in recognition of the vital role that RETIRED TEACHERS fulfill in every community in California and to honor their ongoing commitment to all teachers, the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, hereby designates November 12 – 18, 2006 as CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS WEEK. | ||||
