THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

ITS BOARD, DONORS, STAFF AND FOUNDERS

WHEREAS, PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION has been a local philanthropic organization connecting people, ideas, and resources to support the common good, and it has championed the values of service, innovation, integrity, partnership, and diversity; and

   
 

WHEREAS, PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION was founded in 1963 by H. Bennett Berwick, Robert J. Koshland, John Lauritzen, Theodore M. Lilienthal and Josephine Van Hoesen, who dedicated the organization to investing in ideas to better the community and distributed grants of $4,850 in its first year – a number which has grown to a cumulative grant making total of more than $110 million in 2006; and

   
 

WHEREAS, PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION has been in the vanguard of forging public-private partnerships in San Mateo County and a thought-leader among California’s grant making organizations, the community foundation field and the nonprofit sector as a whole; and

 

 

WHEREAS, PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’s outstanding leadership is comprised of the Board of Directors from across the Peninsula and Silicon Valley, including: Chair Patricia Bresee, Steven D. Anderson, Gloria Rhodes Brown, Caretha Coleman, Bernadine Chuck Fong, Nylda Gemple, Umang Gupta, Charles (Chip) Huggins, Susan M. Hyatt, Teri L. Jackson, Ebon Richard Jones, Betsy Matteson, Linda R. Meier, Mario Panoringan, Jennifer Raiser, Richard Wilkolaski, Jane H. Williams, and by Albert J. Horn, Exq. of Counsel and Vera Bennett, Interim Chief Executive Officer; and

   
 

WHEREAS, PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION should be commended for its significant achievements, including the creation of the Peninsula Partnership for Children, Youth and Families, an initiative within San Mateo County dedicated to supporting children between the ages of 0 and 8 years; the establishment of the Center for Venture Philanthropy, a forum for community investors to catalyze social change through a group of nationally recognized Social Venture Funds; the incubation for Raising A Reader, an award-winning early literacy program now serving thousands of children across San Mateo County and 140 communities nationwide; the funding of the Children’s Health Initiative, which provides universal health care for San Mateo County’s neediest children; and for forty-three years of continued service as a trusted community convener for San Mateo County’s nonprofit organizations, civic leaders and residents,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, does honor and gratefully recognizes the PENINSULA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION for its 43 years of outstanding contributions to the community.
