BACKGROUND

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for December 2006 is Victoria Wright, a Deputy Public Guardian Conservator III, in the Health Department.

DISCUSSION

Victoria has been a County employee since 1995. Since the beginning of her employment with Aging and Adult Services, Victoria has been a valuable member of the Public Guardian program, working with clients who suffer from various mental health problems. Victoria’s clients present numerous psychiatric and behavioral problems, alcohol and drug and behavior issues, which at times lead to conflicts with the law and subsequently often result in clients entering the criminal justice system. Victoria is passionate about her work and approaches all of her clients with equal compassion and caring and never hesitates to go the extra mile to do what is in the best interest of her clients.

Victoria is a team player that understands the importance of collaboration and team work in helping her clients overcome difficulties they often face in their lives. Victoria is a strong advocate on behalf of her clients, who is able to work productively with representatives of other agencies, community, as well as with the clients’ relatives.

Victoria’s efforts on behalf of clients and their families have been recognized on more than one occasion. For example, the National Alliance for Mentally Ill states “NAMI California has a goal that all consumers and their families can be assured of receiving the care they need with respect and dignity. Your honored employee is helping to make this goal a reality.”

Additionally, Robert Evans, Unit Chief of Adult Resource Management Mental Health states “We share many clients and having good collaborative relationships with the Conservatorship office is essential to our mission and goals. Victoria is a role model representing this type of collaboration.”

In addition to Victoria’s daily responsibilities as Deputy Public Guardian, Victoria has assumed a role of a mentor within the Public Guardian program in order to train and guide new staff members in improving the quality of their services to the clients. Victoria’s work and ethical standards as well as her collaborative approach to every task she undertakes, her ability and willingness to go an extra mile to help those in need, whether they are her client, their family, or just her co-workers, has earned her great respect among her colleagues and the leadership team in Aging and Adult Services.

Our County is fortunate to have Victoria Wright as one of its outstanding employees.
