RESOLUTION
 

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

 

BARBARA HAMMERMAN

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Barbara Hammerman was a leader and role model for women in law enforcement, touching many lives and demonstrating outstanding commitment to the community during more than two decades of police service in the County of San Mateo where she was a beloved mentor, teacher, colleague, and friend; and

 

WHEREAS, Barbara Hammerman dedicated her life to the fight against domestic violence and equality for women, as evidenced by her being named to the California Attorney General’s Commission on Domestic Violence, her service on the Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) Board of Directors and the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women, and her commitment to speaking with women’s groups on the issues; an in recognition of her achievements, the County of San Mateo designated August 16, 2005 as Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman Day; and

 

WHEREAS, Barbara Hammerman was the first woman officer in San Mateo County to ride in the motorcycle unit, became the San Mateo Police Department’s first female sergeant and its first lieutenant, and was the first openly gay officer serving in the department; and further, was the first to establish random child safety and drunk driving checkpoints, and was one of the few female narcotics detectives in San Mateo and the first detective ever to write and serve in excess of 70 search warrants; and

 

WHEREAS, Barbara Hammerman gave back to the community through her volunteer work with the Police Activities League, her support of healthy lifestyles and wellness programs, and after retirement by bringing public attention to brain cancer and groundbreaking brain tumor research;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, now honors the life of Barbara Hammerman with gratitude for the legacy of excellence she leaves behind, and expresses its deepest sympathy to her family for their loss with the assurance that Barbara Hammerman now rests in peace.
