BACKGROUND:

San Mateo County is responsible for providing necessary medical care to its medically indigent population. This care, in many cases, includes professional anesthesia services. Since November 1, 2005, anesthesia services have been provided at SMMC by Sequoia Anesthesia Consultants. A 6 month extension to the contract with Sequoia Anesthesia Consultants is requested during which time the SMMC will negotiate a new contract for anesthesia services.

DISCUSSION:

Sequoia Anesthesia Consultants was selected through an RFP process in 2005 to provide professional anesthesiology services. The 2005-06 Agreement provides for a term from November 1, 2005 through October 31, 2006 and a maximum amount possible of $1,660,000. This amendment will extend the Agreement to April 30, 2007, and increase the total amount payable under the Agreement by $830,000 to $2,490,000.

Anesthesia services are provided under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Patient Care Services. Monitoring and evaluation of the quality of services provided by contractor are accomplished through peer review by the Quality Assurance Committee and the Executive Committee of the medical staff.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The term of the Amendment to the Agreement is from November 1, 2006 through April 30, 2007. The maximum amount the County shall be obligated to pay Contractor is $2,490,000. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center’s FY2006-07 Adopted Budget.
