RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SHERIFF TO EXECUTE

AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE COUNTY OF SAN MATEO AND THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE (DOJ) FOR THE

FIREARMS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EDUCATION & INTERVENTION PROJECT

AS WELL AS RELATED DOCUMENTS NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE GRANT

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, the use of prohibited firearms in instances of domestic violence is a serious and growing concern in San Mateo County and throughout the State, too often resulting in tragic loss of life and the shattering of families; and

WHEREAS, the California Department of Justice(DOJ) has proposed two-year grant funding to San Mateo County for the establishment of a regional Unit for firearms domestic violence education and intervention and further proposed to establish a Unit including a fully dedicated State DOJ Agent and a Crime Analyst; and

 

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo has received confirmation of DOJ funding in the amount of for $380,000 and has indicated that the Sheriff will manage the Firearms Domestic Violence Program grant, and that the funds will be allocated to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office to support a regional approach to educate and apprehend those persons with various restraining orders who are illegally in possession of a firearm, throughout the County; and

 

WHEREAS, implementation of the Firearms Domestic grant will require an agreement between the County of San Mateo and State DOJ , and the commitment of this Board of Supervisors and County funds equivalent to the cost of one Sheriff’s detective and limited ancillary costs to match the DOJ funding proposal for this program; and

WHEREAS, this Board of Supervisors is concerned about firearm domestic violence abuse, and has examined the DOJ proposal, and desires to participate in the Firearms Domestic Violence Education and Intervention Program; and

WHEREAS, the DOJ has requested this Board to authorize Sheriff to sign the the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DOJ for the implementation of this program, at such time as it is ready, and this Board wishes to so authorize the Sheriff to execute the MOU on behalf of the County, and it is further agreed that County Counsel shall review the MOU prior to execution to ensure it is in accordance with the County’s commitment to this program;

 

    NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Sheriff of the County of San Mateo is authorized, on behalf of the County of San Mateo, to execute the forthcoming MOU with the California Department of Justice, and to execute all related documents necessary to administer the DOJ Firearms Domestic Violence funds consistent with the terms of the MOU.
