SPECIAL NOTICE/HEARING:

VOTE REQUIRED:

Yes

TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Richard Gordon

SUBJECT:

Reappointment of Geoffrey Allen to the Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that Geoffrey Allen be appointed to the Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council (PMAC). It is recommended that Mr. Allen be appointed to a term that ends on December 1, 2010.

VISION ALIGNMENT:

Commitment: 2

Goal(s): Civic engagement -- including voting, public service, charitable giving, volunteerism, and participation in public discussions of important issues -- is uniformly high among the diverse population of San Mateo County.

BACKGROUND:

Mr. Allen is currently a member of the Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council (PMAC), having served as a representative of District 1 since 1999.

Under normal circumstances, when an elected official is running for office unopposed in one of the county’s three advisory councils, the election is canceled and the official is appointed to the unopposed office.

In the case of Mr. Allen, it was not communicated to the Elections Office that he wished to continue to serve on PMAC. There were no challengers to the seat he represents, and he was then not reappointed to PMAC.

Mr. Allen indicated his interest to continue serving on PMAC, and on February 13, 2007 PMAC voted to advise the Board of Supervisors that they wished to see Mr. Allen continue to serve.

Mr. Allen has been a valued member of PMAC since he first began serving in 1999, and his continued involvement as an elected member of the council is an asset to the entire community.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.
