THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION HONORING AND COMMENDING

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Black History Month was originally established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African-American author and scholar; and

   

WHEREAS, Black History Month began as Dr. Woodson’s hope that through this special observance, all Americans would be reminded of their ethnic roots, and that a feeling of togetherness between racial groups in the United States would develop out of mutual respect and equality for all; and

   

WHEREAS, Black History Month examines the collective ingenuity, creativity, cultural and political experience of Africans and those of African descent through a variety of programs, including lectures, exhibitions, cultural activities; and

   

WHEREAS, Black History Month through these programs and activities increases the public’s awareness of the rich history of African-Americans; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is a diverse community that appreciates the contributions of African-Americans to the county and American history.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of February as Black History Month.
