PROCLAMATION HONORING AND COMMENDING | ||||
BLACK HISTORY MONTH | ||||

WHEREAS, Black History Month was originally established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African-American author and scholar; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Black History Month began as Dr. Woodson’s hope that through this special observance, all Americans would be reminded of their ethnic roots, and that a feeling of togetherness between racial groups in the United States would develop out of mutual respect and equality for all; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Black History Month examines the collective ingenuity, creativity, cultural and political experience of Africans and those of African descent through a variety of programs, including lectures, exhibitions, cultural activities; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Black History Month through these programs and activities increases the public’s awareness of the rich history of African-Americans; and | ||||
WHEREAS, San Mateo County is a diverse community that appreciates the contributions of African-Americans to the county and American history. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of February as Black History Month. | ||||
