PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County that alternative dispute resolution has grown remarkably in the past few years; and

WHEREAS, our society has become increasingly contentious, leading to social disharmony, and incidents of senseless violence, resulting in a greater need for law enforcement and dispute adjudication agencies; and

WHEREAS, the growth of mediation is partly fueled by dissatisfaction with adversarial problem-solving and its high cost and slow results, and it is also a search for something better; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to ameliorate these conditions, and to improve relations among citizens and within neighborhoods and families, many of our citizens have turned to mediation with resultant social and economic benefits; and

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, the Multi-Option ADR Project, the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center and the San Mateo County Bar Association are sponsoring MEDIATION WEEK 2006 and all of these groups are engaged in promoting the use of mediation and raising public consciousness about its merits throughout the year and particularly during the week of March 18 – 24, 2007,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that this Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, hereby designates the week of March 18 – 24, 2007 as CALIFORNIA MEDIATION WEEK and expresses sincere appreciation to our citizens who are working diligently to assist fellow citizens and local agencies in addressing conflict resolution needs.
