Elizabeth Stewart Carlson

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Stewart Carlson has focused two careers on helping others, while establishing herself as a model for emulation; and

   

WHEREAS, Betty first spent more than a quarter-century as a registered nurse caring for patients and their families, including some 40 years as an honored member of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary; and

   

WHEREAS, since 1984, Betty has served the Peninsula as district office manager for US Rep. Tom Lantos, where among her many responsibilities are veterans affairs and other military matters; and

   

WHEREAS, Betty’s tireless dedication to the people of San Mateo County is underscored by her volunteer efforts, ranging from senior conferences to library benefits to school fundraisers to public television to victims rights.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Elizabeth Stewart Carlson upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Betty and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

May T. Gee

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, May T. Gee started down her public career as a shipyard welder soon after high school graduation in 1942, joining in 1944 the US Women’s Army Corp and served in military intelligence; she was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant; and

   

WHEREAS, during her 25-year career with the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, May served on various public boards, commissions and associations, including with the North Coast Water District and the San Mateo County as well as the Pacifica planning committees; and

   

WHEREAS, May also serves on the federal Selective Service Board, and has served with numerous volunteer organizations, including PTAs, senior groups, the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Organization of Chinese Americans; and

   

WHEREAS, May has served her city, county, state and country since the mid-1940s; she gives of herself wholly, inspires all she meets and has done much to the benefit of countless individuals and families throughout San Mateo County.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates May T. Gee upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to May and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Judith A. Heyboer

WHEREAS, Judith A. Heyboer retired in 2000 as senior vice president of human resources at Genentech, Inc., to become a “more complete and capable person;” and

   

WHEREAS, Judy almost immediately replaced her complex corporate commitments with an equally busy schedule filled with regional non-profits gaining tremendous support from her experiences, talents and expertise; and

   

WHEREAS, Judy’s unwavering dedication to youth and women is underscored by her tireless work through Friends for Youth, Home Safe and the Global Women’s Leadership Center, among others; and

   

WHEREAS, Judy’s personal life reflects her professional life as she serves as a mentor to a young woman, and continues to share of herself to help make the Peninsula a better place one woman and one youth at a time.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Judith A. Heyboer upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Judy and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Jennifer E. Horne

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Jennifer E. Horne is an honors graduate of Stanford Law School, who declined the benefits and perks of private practice to wholly devote herself to representing low-income teenage parents; and

   

WHEREAS, since 1994, Jennifer has guided the Teen Parents Project at the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, working closely with educators, counselors and public health nurses to help teenage parents with legal issues; and

   

WHEREAS, Jennifer has handled some 1,200 cases and counting, providing counsel on myriad topics, including paternity, custody, rape, domestic violence, emancipation, public assistance, subsidized housing, immigration and the right to attend school; and

   

WHEREAS, Jennifer’s work on behalf of a population often stigmatized and invisible affects three generations of a single family; her efforts are key to enhancing chances for success and brighter futures for teenage parents and their children.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Jennifer E. Horne upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Jennifer and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Rosalyn C. Koo

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Rosalyn C. Koo has devoted considerable resources toward ensuring Asian Americans and their cultures in San Mateo County are not overlooked nor forgotten; and

   

WHEREAS, since 1984, Roz has been instrumental in the success of Self-Help for the Elderly, serving as chairperson and as director; and

   

WHEREAS, Roz was founding president of the Self-Help for the Elderly Foundation, which has raised some $2 million for the agency; and

   

WHEREAS, Roz started Self-Help Senior Center in Central Park, raised at least $100,000 annually since 1992, to benefit the center’s more than 1,000 low- and moderate-income clients; and

   

WHEREAS, since 2000, Roz has served as a board member of Sustainable San Mateo; and since 2004, has greatly assisted the San Mateo County Elections Office in outreach to Chinese-American voters; and since 2005, has served as co-chair of the Asian American Library Committee of the Library Foundation of San Mateo.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Rosalyn C. Koo upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Roz and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Georgi LaBerge

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Georgi Laberge has devoted some three decades to her Redwood City community as well as San Mateo County as a whole; and

   

WHEREAS, as a councilmember, Georgi founded the Pride and Beautification Committee, created Redwood City’s first-ever sister-city relationship, established guidelines for future sister-city proposals and placed childcare at the forefront of city policies; and

   

WHEREAS, as a board member and as executive director of the San Mateo Community Colleges Foundation, Georgi has not only enhanced the foundation’s assets, but also tremendously improved the organization’s ability to support special projects and scholarships; and

   

WHEREAS, Georgi’s focus on children was underscored by her request of guests at her wedding, in lieu of gifts, to contribute to the Child Care Fund, which has supported childcare on the Peninsula for 14 years.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Georgi LaBerge upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Georgi and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Shirley LaMarr

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Shirley LaMarr is the definition of success, reversing her life from selling herself on the streets to feed her addiction, to co-directing for the past 12 years CHOICES, a jail-based program motivating men and women inmates to follow her example; and

   

WHEREAS, from inception to date, under Shirley’s unwavering leadership and guidance, the CHOICES program has never had one incident of violence nor one instance of contraband materials; and

   

WHEREAS, Shirley is true to herself and true to those around her; she gives voice to the voiceless and light to those in the dark; she demands societal attention for those easily forgotten, while inspiring positive actions from those seeking new lives; and

   

WHEREAS, Shirley travels more than 170 miles round-trip daily to sit with, work with and commiserate with some of the hardest felons in the county jail and convinces a great portion of them that there is hope, that there is another way.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Shirley LaMarr upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Shirley and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

Barbara Ann Liedtke

WHEREAS, Barbara Ann Liedtke is a San Mateo County native, who continues to work and volunteer on the peninsula to benefit her community; and

   

WHEREAS, after returning in 1991 from the Dominican Republic, where Barbara spent 11 years with the Peace Corp and with Catholic Relief Services, Barbara joined the Human Investment Project, better known as HIP Housing; and

   

WHEREAS, for 15 years and counting, Barbara has helped myriad San Mateo County lower-income individuals and families with help and support, ranging from case management to housing to language translation to holiday food drives; and

   

WHEREAS, Barbara’s focus and selfless dedication provides a model for youth as well as adults; her generosity with her time and resources is matched only by her willingness to help in all ways possible.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Barbara Ann Liedtke upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Barbara and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

WHEREAS, Karen Ann Kane Philip was appointed in 1993 as superintendent of the Millbrae Elementary School District, the youngest woman ever to hold the position in the history of the district; and

   

WHEREAS, Karen’s management style is one that focuses on leading from the front, while actively ensuring that her enthusiasm and energy result in positive effects for the balance of her teams; and

   

WHEREAS, Karen’s tireless dedication to the education of children is underscored by her Learning Center Model for Children with Disabilities, improvements for the Gifted and Talented Program, enhanced technologies for schools and a zero-tolerance policy for violence and substance abuse; and

   

WHEREAS, through her extensive volunteer commitments with a host of charitable organizations, including various service clubs, Tracey’s Place of Hope, Safe Harbor Shelter and Women for Women International, Karen’s focus on families extends throughout San Mateo County.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Karen Ann Kane Philip upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and extends to Karen and her family its gratitude and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.

WHEREAS, Georgette Y. Sarles has been active in the Daly City business community since opening her own beauty supply and salon in 1963 at Westlake Shopping Center; and

   

WHEREAS, starting with the Westlake Merchants Association and through her longtime membership with the Daly City/Colma Chamber of Commerce, Georgette’s tremendous generosity with her time and resources has benefited myriad individuals and families; and

   

WHEREAS, Georgette has testified before lawmakers in Sacramento, representing business, neighborhood as well as civic interests of Daly City; and

   

WHEREAS, Georgette’s tireless commitment to her community has touched every segment of the population, from business people to women to low-income families to children and educators in northern San Mateo County and throughout the Peninsula.
