VISION ALIGNMENT:

Commitment: Ensure basic health and safety for all.

Goal 7: Maintain and enhance the public safety of all residents and visitors.

This donation will help to improve outreach to families in the North Fair Oaks and unincorporated costal communities.

BACKGROUND:

In 1999 the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office launched the Community Alliance to Revitalize our Neighborhood (CARON) Program as a progressive and innovative step toward addressing the reduction and prevention of youth gang involvement and violence, and the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs in North Fair Oaks and unincorporated costal communities. The CARON Program is a collaboration of schools, the faith community, youth groups and parents to develop, implement and coordinate programs that address the needs of youth.

One of the important aspects of the CARON Program is to increase parental involvement with their children. One way to achieve this is by providing opportunities for parents to participate in activities with their children.

DISCUSSION:

The donation from the San Mateo Credit Union in the amount of $4,000 will be used to purchase gift certificates to California State Parks. The gift certificates provide opportunities for parents to participate in activities with their children. It not only provides an educational experience but also a safe and fun environment for families.

The purchase of the gift certificates is also a donation to the California State Parks which ensures the money is used as a charitable contribution not once but twice.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no effect upon the net County cost.
