TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Sheriff Greg Munks

SUBJECT:

Acceptance of a $5,000 Donation from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution authorizing the acceptance of a donation in the amount of $5,000 from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

VISION ALIGNMENT:

Commitment: Ensure basic health and safety for all.

Goal 7: Maintain and enhance the public safety of all residents and visitors.

The donation will enhance the ability of law enforcement to protect innocent persons and apprehend and neutralize dangerous and violent individuals, in order to provide a safe community for all residents in San Mateo County.

BACKGROUND:

The Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team provides a ready response to situations that are beyond the capabilities of normally equipped and trained law enforcement personnel.

Local agencies, including fire departments, health services, hazardous material units, and bomb squads can and will control and mitigate the consequences of the local disasters and other large scale incidents, as each of the entities possesses technical expertise in their specialized fields. However, each of these local agencies will rely on the Sheriff’s SWAT Team for suspect apprehension, crowd control, evacuation, evidence collection, crime scene control, follow-up search/arrest warrant service, and detention of quarantined persons.

DISCUSSION:

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation wishes to donate $5,000 to the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team. The donation will be used to purchase equipment and greatly enhance the SWAT Team’s capability to provide a ready response in situations when they are called upon.

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the Resolution as to legal form.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The funds were deposited into the Trust Account No. 04032 on February 22, 2007 and will be used for prospective equipment purchases. There is no effect upon the net County cost.
