WHEREAS, communities across the country will be designating the week of April 2-8, 2007, as PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK, and will be promoting activities to improve the preparedness of our communities against public health threats; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County residents need to take the first steps to prepare for public health threats caused by natural and man made disasters; and

WHEREAS, millions of people prepared as best they could for Hurricane Katrina, yet the devastating winds and soaking rains were only a prelude to a series of severe public health threats. Almost all heath and sanitation services were knocked out and government emergency response was crippled. The aftermath of the storm vividly illustrated that New Orleans’ most vulnerable populationsthe poor, the young, the elderly and the chronically ill were disproportionately impacted by the disaster; and

WHEREAS, city and County elected officials and department heads, community- and faith- based organizations, unions, schools, businesses, health and medical care providers, and vulnerable populations have spent the past year preparing for a flu pandemic; and

WHEREAS, this year the theme of San Mateo County’s PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK is “Preparedness and Public Health Threats: Addressing the Unique Needs of the Nation’s Vulnerable Populations”. As a part of PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK, the San Mateo County Health Department will be presenting the County’s Pandemic Flu response and preparedness plans to local senior citizens. An element of the plan is a section addressing the unique needs of vulnerable populations prepared by vulnerable population providers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the San Mateo Board of Supervisors designates the week of April 2-8, 2007, as “PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK” throughout San Mateo County and supports the development of preparedness plans to support vulnerable populations against public health threats.
