THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING APRIL 22 THROUGH APRIL 28, 2007 AS

VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK

WHEREAS, as a nation devoted to liberty and justice for all, America must increase its efforts to protect, restore, and expand crime victims’ rights and services so that they apply to every victim, every time; and

WHEREAS, 23 million Americans are victims of crime each year, and of those, 5.2 million are victims of violent crime; and

WHEREAS, all victims and survivors of crime deserve compassion, respect, resources, and justice; and

WHEREAS, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week—April 22–28, 2007—offers us all the opportunity to recommit ourselves to ensuring that every victim is afforded his or her legal rights and treated as a key participant in our criminal justice system; and

WHEREAS, as we carry crime victims’ rights into 2007 and beyond, we must strive to create a nation where the legal rights of victims are honored and individuals are accountable for their treatment of victims; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County operates a Victim Center Program that last year processed over 3,650 victim referrals from law enforcement, had contact with over 1,700 new victims, of which over 300 were provided Crisis Intervention services and claims assistance to victims was provided over 650 times; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is joining forces with victims service programs and criminal justice agencies throughout our nation to raise awareness of victims’ rights.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, does hereby designate the week of April 22 through April 28, 2007 as VICTIMS’ RIGHTS WEEK in San Mateo County.
