Upon Receiving The | ||||
2007 Community Leadership Award Presented by the Peninsula Coalition | ||||

WHEREAS, Lennie Roberts, a third-generation Californian, whose family crossed the Great Plains in a covered wagon, has devoted her life toward community and environmental stewardship; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1972, Lennie helped create the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and continues to play a significant role in preserving more than 50,000 acres in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties; and | ||||
WHEREAS, since 1978, Lennie has volunteered her resources as the full-time San Mateo County legislative advocate for the Committee for Green Foothills, monitoring all land-use plans affecting the county’s rural areas, especially the environmentally sensitive coast; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Lennie’s leadership was instrumental in solving several issues on the Peninsula, such as the Devil’s Slide tunnel initiative and Measure A, approved by voters in 1986 to protect the coast from sprawl and shore-based oil facilities; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Lennie’s tireless work on behalf of the people of San Mateo County has earned widespread praise and respect, including recognition in 1999 by the Half Moon Bay Review Magazine as one of the coast’s 25 most influential people of the century; Sierra Magazine called her an “urban legend” in its millennium salute to Bay Area activists; and in 2003, the county’s Commission on the Status of Women inducted Lennie into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Lenny Roberts as the Peninsula Coalition presents her with its 2007 Community Leadership Award. The honor is well deserved, and the Board hereby extends its gratitude and adds sincere wishes to Lenny for continued excellence. | ||||
