WHEREAS, Jackie Speier’s life in the public light started in the late-1970s as an aide accompanying the late-US Rep. Leo J. Ryan on a fact-finding trip to the People’s Temple site in the South American country of Guyana; and

WHEREAS, during that trip, gunmen assassinated the congressman in November 1978 on a jungle airstrip and left Jackie for dead after shooting her five times; and

WHEREAS, Jackie carries two bullets inside her to this day, but refers to the horrific experience as a great life-gift of urgency, a catalyst to living every day to the fullest and never putting anything off; and

WHEREAS, from her first term in 1981 as a San Mateo County supervisor through five terms in the state Assembly through two terms in the state Senate, Jackie has fought to help the helpless, protect the defenseless and speak for the voiceless through more than 300 pieces of legislation signed by Democratic as well as Republican governors; and

WHEREAS, Jackie’s decades of steadfast advocacy on behalf of the people of San Mateo County will be missed tremendously, but the loss is tempered by the knowledge that regardless of title or office, Jackie will always and forever be one of the Peninsula, for the Peninsula and by the Peninsula.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Jackie Speier as the Peninsula Coalition names her its 2007 Citizen of the Year. The honor is well deserved, and the Board hereby extends sincere wishes to Jackie for continued success and excellence.
