RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF AB 1472, THE CALIFORNIA HEALTHY PLACES ACT OF 2008

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, too many Californians experience avoidable injuries or suffer from chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and asthma; and

 

WHEREAS, our health is affected by where we live, work and play; and in order for our communities to be healthy, we need to live in healthy communities; and

 

WHEREAS, the County has dedicated resources and leads a community-driven effort in eliminating health disparities; and

 

WHEREAS, on April 4, 2006, the Board of Supervisors committed to supporting healthy communities through the adoption of Resolution No. 067893 to enact the More Livable San Mateo County model policy and Resolution No. 067894 to establish a More Livable San Mateo County Work Group; and

 
 

WHEREAS, the County was one of five entities nationwide selected to participate in a workshop on May 10-11, 2007, sponsored by the National Association of City and County Health Officers and the American Planners Association, learn how to conduct Health Impact Assessments; and

 

WHEREAS, AB 1472, the California Healthy Places Act of 2008 would provide technical assistance and grants to community organizations and public health agencies to evaluate land-use planning decisions to ensure that they create communities that promote health, through the California Public Health Department and would establish a program to guide and support cities and counties in conducting Health Impact Assessments;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by adoption of this resolution supports AB 1472, the California Healthy Places Act of 2008.
