DESIGNATING JUNE 5, 2007 AS

NATIONAL HUNGER

AWARENESS DAY

WHEREAS, The Food Bank, Inc. of Santa Clara County was formed in 1974 by Economic and Social Opportunities, and incorporated as a non-profit agency in 1979. In 1988, the San Mateo County Food Bank merged with The Food Bank, Inc. of Santa Clara County to become Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties; and

 

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is a private non-profit organization that collects and distributes more than 30 million pounds of food each year to low-income children, adults and seniors. The Food Bank currently serves an average of 162,000 individuals each month; nearly 60% are families with dependent children; and

   

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank conducted a Hunger Analysis survey and discovered that 63% of low-income residents in San Mateo County struggle to find enough food to eat. Second Harvest Food Bank has implemented programs and expanded partnerships with the Human Services Agency, Aging and Adult Services in the Health Department and other community based organizations to reach more people and wipe out hunger in San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank is a certified member of America’s Second Harvest, a network of food bank and food distribution programs in the United States. This membership allows Second Harvest Food Bank to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support; and

   

WHEREAS, In 1992, Second Harvest Food Bank moved into a new 65,000 square foot warehouse in San Jose which serves as its main food distribution center. In June of 1995, the Peninsula Distribution Center began serving San Mateo County in a newly renovated 22,000 square foot warehouse in San Carlos.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors designates June 5, 2007 as National Hunger Awareness Day throughout San Mateo County and encourages everyone to support local anti-hunger efforts and programs.
