THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION COMMENDING

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

80th YEAR IN OPERATION

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) began operations as Mills Field on May 7, 1927; and

   

WHEREAS, in 1931, the name was changed to San Francisco Municipal Airport and officially became San Francisco International Airport in 1955; and

   

WHEREAS, SFO is the largest airport in Northern California and is the fourteenth busiest airport in the nation and twenty-fifth busiest airport in the world; and

   

WHEREAS, SFO was the first major airport to meet the State’s airport noise variance requirements and has spent more than $156 million to improve the quality of life for the communities near SFO; and

WHEREAS, SFO is the largest single employment center in San Mateo County, accounting for more than 20,000 jobs; and

WHEREAS, SFO offers nonstop links with more than 29 international points on 25 international carriers and connects more than 60 cities in the United States on 20 domestic airlines.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on the Twenty-ninth day of June, Two Thousand and Seven, commends the San Francisco International Airport on its 80th year in operation.
