RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS) TO IMPLEMENT A STROKE CENTER POLICY DIRECTING AMBULANCES TO TRANSPORT ACUTE STROKE PATIENTS TO STROKE CENTERS

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of
California, that
|
|
WHEREAS, approximately 700,000 Americans suffer a stroke every year and 80% of the stroke survivors are left with a disability; and
|
|
WHEREAS, these disabilities can be mitigated if medical treatment is given
rapidly; and
|
|
WHEREAS, stroke centers are committed to providing timely and
comprehensive treatment to acute stroke patients; and
|
|
WHEREAS, four hospitals (Kaiser Redwood City, Mills-Peninsula Hospital, Seton Medical Center, and Stanford), which receive San Mateo County 9-1-1 ambulances are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations as primary stroke centers and two of these hospitals are able to provide invasive procedures for acute stroke:

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that Emergency Medical Services shall implement a stroke center policy directing ambulances to transport acute stroke patients to stroke centers.
