THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR.

Upon his retirement as Superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District

WHEREAS, upon retiring as Superintendent from the San Mateo Union High School District on June 29, 2007, SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR. brings to a close a forty year career in education, thirty-nine years of which have been spent in service to the District; and

   
 

WHEREAS, SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR. also served the San Mateo Union High School District as Associate Superintendent - Human Resources, Director of Personnel, Principal and Assistant Principal of Capuchino High School, Director of Human Resources, and teacher of Mathematics; and

   
 

WHEREAS, as Principal, he accomplished for Capuchino High School the distinguished Carnegie Grant awarded to only a few hundred schools across the nation and, in collaboration with Stanford University, was the originator for Stanford’s Study of Family Structure Team, which involved Capuchino as one of its research schools; and

 

 

WHEREAS, SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR. is recognized as a remarkable visionary and advocate for ALL students and, under his leadership as Superintendent, made a profound difference in the lives of countless students because he courageously pursued on their behalf the Academic Core Curriculum and seven-period day schedule, which require ninth and tenth graders to enroll in college preparatory coursework thereby giving them choices about their futures not previously available to them; and

   
 

WHEREAS, as Superintendent, SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR. led the effort which garnered support from the voters to pass a $298 million bond measure to continue the new construction and modernization of the District’s high schools,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends SAMUEL JOHNSON, JR. on his distinguished career as an educational leader and advocate for youth, applauds his contributions to the legacy of the San Mateo Union High School District, congratulates him on his exemplary display of local, state and national achievements, and extends sincere best wishes for continued success in the future.
